Let Your Art Live Publicly

This project was for our final action project of the You Are Beautiful class. This action project was all about installing your own public art pieces. The art pieces that we had to install was the stickers we had made for our second action project for YAB. The second piece of art we had to install was the collaborative You Are Beautiful bus shelter. This specific project had to do with a lot of documentation because we had to make a movie that included the people you gave the stickers to, the places you put the stickers, the people you gave the stickers to and the YAB bus shelter. The reason it was important to document the piece of art was because a lot of the piece got taken down or changed in some way. I think art changes when it is in the public because it gives people a way to access art without having boundaries. When installing the stickers it went very smooth because each sticker only took about 30 sec. to install and document, but as for the YAB bus shelter it was a little difficult. the reason it was difficult to install the bus shelter was because it was such a big install and it was difficult to get it to the place we were going to put it because we had to roll it there on a cart. Another part that was rather difficult was moving it in thick mushy snow because it would get stuck a lot and since it was cold it was hard to hold onto the cold metal cart. I learned a lot from this project such as how easy it is to make and install your own pieces of public art and also how fun it is in the process over all i love this project out of all the projects I've done so far at GCE. I am not only proud of the work i did, but i am proud of the whole class and how we worked as a team to get this install done. Please watch my video below and see the pieces of art we created. ENJOY!

Closed Loop Graffiti?

This project was for my science and art class called Bioneers. For this project we had to pick a product to improve on. The outcome we wanted to achieve was to make the product more closed loop. Closed loop is when a cycle will flow and eventually get to the beginning again and start all over with the cycle. For example closed loop is when nothing is wasted so let's say we have a flower and a worm eats the flower and a coyote eats the worm and the coyote dies and decomposes letting nutrients go back into the earth to help another plant to grow.

The product I chose to make closed loop is Ironlak acrylic aerosol spray paint. I chose this product because I am a use and I wanted to learn more about what I am using and if there is any way to make it better and change the waste produced by the product. Currently when you buy Ironlak spray paint or any other spray paint you throw it out after you use it. When you throw out the spray paint it is going to a landfill to sit there for a long time and since their cans are made of steel and steel does not decompose then the steel with just be wasted and will just sit in a landfill forever.

I am proposing a way that you can recycle your old and empty can while also getting something out of it. I am thinking of a way that Ironlak can buy back the empty cans and for every can you get a spray paint cap, but if you turn in five cans you will get a free full can of paint. By us doing this we will reduce the steel waste and the waste of all the other materials that you throw out. It can benefit Ironlak too because then they wouldn't have to buy more materials they can just reuse all the materials on the old cans.

Spread The Word

This action project is for my art class called You Are Beautiful. The purpose of this action project was to collaborate on a class public piece while also creating out own sticker with a message of our choice on it. For the collaborative piece everyone had to come up with a design idea that was inspired by a art museum we went to as a field experience. Then we all got to choose one of them based on budget and time and also creativity. After we chose the design we all got to pick a letter out of the phrase "You Are Beautiful" Then get to work on designing our letter in our own unique way. Then comes the second part of the project, our own personal piece. We had to think of a message we wanted to turn into public art some people chose a message that had a deep meaning and some just had fun and did a happy message. As for me I chose the message "stay strong". After we have chosen our message we had to either screen print it into stickers or make stamps that can be turned into stickers. I am personally proud of how my stickers and letter came out. I learned so much in this project for example how to use a jigsaw.

Stay Strong
Materials: Wood, Stickers, Markers, Paint, Rubber, Paper, jigsaw, Carving tools, Doors, Nails, Screws.

Written messages in public art are important because it makes you think about the meaning behind the message. Written messages also make you think about how the message applies to your own life. For example we studied the art piece, You Are Beautiful by Matthew Hoffman. This big message is presented to the world through a small silver sticker. In the words of Matthew Hoffman " I think everyone should hear this at least once a day." The message of this simple little sticker can mean so much to someone. It can brighten someone's day when they are feeling down, or even stop someone from taking their life.

My personal piece that I created is a small white sticker that has the phrase "stay strong" on it. I picked this phrase because many people who take their own life or have depression need motivation to stay strong. The aesthetics are very simple so people pay attention to the message yet colorful to catch your attention.

The process of making this piece was first, to think of a message and then, to draw out what we wanted the message to look like. Then we were assigned to either do screen printing or creating a rubber stamp. I was assigned to create a rubber stamp. First, I drew what I want my message to look like on paper. Then I pressed the rubberstamp onto the drawing to create a outline for what I am cutting. Then, I cut out the message. Lastly, I rolled paint onto the rubber stamp and print the message onto the sticker paper.

The second part of this action, we did the You Are Beautiful collaborative project. For that part everyone had to pick a letter in the phrase You Are Beautiful and carve out the letter however you want. Then we decorated our letter with recycled materials. Some people didn't choose to cut it out they just painted the letter. The letter I chose to do is the letter "R." The process of making the letter was we went on a field trip to The Rebuilding Exchange and picked up wood and materials to make the sculpture.

The sculpture would eventually be turned into a bus shelter with the phrase You Are Beautiful inside of it. The reason why it took the form of a bus shelter is for people to have a place to go when there is harsh wind or bad weather. The picture of the letter below is the letter I created. Since this class was a lot about graffiti I decided to do a graffiti "R." I also chose to fill the letter with other classmates messages and original graffiti stickers.

Color Change

This project is for my science and art class named Bioneers. The purpose of this project was to make a design based on a certain animal adaptation. First we had to pick an animal with a unique adaptation. Next, we had to come up with a design that mimicked that animal's adaptation. Lastly, we had to make a collage of what we wanted it to look like a how it worked. For this project I chose a chameleon and its ability to change colors. I learned a lot about what allows a chameleon to change colors and why. I am proud of all the work I did on the chameleon and my design. Please read more about the chameleons design and my design below. Enjoy!

current design:

The current design of a chameleon is very complicated but amazing. The chameleon has 8 layers of skin and the first layer is transparent. Under the first layer of skin are pouches of different color pigments that come out for camouflage or other reasons. Most people think chameleons only change color for blending in, but they also change to show emotion or heat signatures. The reason the chameleons change colors is cause the color packets burst letting a certain color come to the surface of the skin and change the chameleons skin color. If you look at the image below you can see what the skin of a chameleon looks like up close.

Minette. "Chromataphores." Wikimedia Commons, 24 Nov. 2007. Web. 22 Nov. 2013

(Re)Design
My design is a skintight latex suit that has a transparent top layer that acts like a chameleon's skin. It also has a clear belt with a very tiny camera attached to the side that picks up on your surroundings and changes the color of the suit. The suit covers your whole body except for your eyes making it less likely for you to be spotted. Under the transparent layer is hidden color packets that come out when needed just like a chameleon's design. We can use this design in such places as war or just when we need to be stealthy and hide. I think this design is better than original camouflage because camouflage is mainly forest colors which only give you select places to hide. With my new design you will be able to hide anywhere without being detected. Also the suit is much lighter than wearing camouflage clothes and it will allow you to move quicker. The reason you are able to move quicker is because it has less resistance and less weight than a regular camouflage outfit.

If you look at the collage below you will see that the figure is blending in with the background. That happened because of the camera that picks up on the surroundings and changes the color of the suit.

The Amazing Hood Orchid

This project is for my science and art class called Bioneers. The purpose of this project was to pick a plant to research and write what we could learn from it or build something that could mimic the function or structure of the plant. In this unit we went to a conservatory and looked at a bunch of plants and I decided to study the hood orchid (Pterostylis). I learned a lot about the hood orchid while researching it and I also got to see it up close and to see all the unique features.

The process of this action project was first I had to research my plant and find out 5 interesting facts about that plant. Next I had to think of what I could learn from this plant such as finding shelter with few resources to work with. I learned about shelter because that is one of the most unique things about the plant; because it has a leaf behind the flower which acts as a hood for protection and trapping flies and other small insects. Three things I think we can learn from the plant is use what you have as shelter I think that one explains itself. Another is patience because the plant cannot just get up and get what it needs it has to wait for it. The last thing I think we can learn from this plant is to adapt because when it rains the plant adapts to using its leaf as a hood.

When I was asked to apply this to a human design I instantly thought of a hoodie. I designed a hoodie with a rubbery outside to keep the rain off and a soft inside to keep you warm throughout the year. In the pocket of the hoodie it has a built in reusable bottle that connects to the strings in the hoodie that you can drink out of. It also has a long hood that automatically activates when hit by a raindrop. a scarf built into the side pulls around the face protecting it from strong winds and rain. Most people would say that my idea is a rain coat, In some ways it is but my design is mimicking the genius design of the Hood Orchid. Most rain coats are very thin and need a layer under it but my design can be used by itself because it has a thick and fluffy inside. My design looks like a normal hoodie when it is warm outside but when it rains it converts itself into a very stylish coat. In addition most rain coats are made out of plastic mine is made of rubber which is much more durable and can be kept for many years. Please see my illustrations below to better understand my design. ENJOY!

Our Garden Is Beautiful- BKJ

This project is for my art class called You Are Beautiful. In this project we have looked at two peoples works of art such as JR and Matthew Hoffman. We incorporated their work in our project by combining them into one. JR's art consisted of printing faces of people and pasting them in neighborhoods as inspiration or as a sign that everyone is equal and should be treated that way. Matthew Hoffman's work was the very popular and world famous art piece called You Are Beautiful. The purpose of this project was to get a feel of what its like to create and install your own art piece. I learned a lot while building this project such as how to wheat paste and install a piece of art.

Artist statement
Public art is art that can be touched looked at and is allow to be in the space that it is in and also accessible to everybody and anybody such as art in a park or public walkway like a street or a park garden. The purpose of the project was to create our own piece of public art that would make an ordinary walkway into a beautiful space that will bring life to our Chicago city block. Also it was to get a feel of how it is to build a piece of art and install it publicly. In the process of planning JR and Matthew Hoffman were big inspirations because Matthew Hoffman was the creator of the you are beautiful project and the is what we are spelling out in our project. JR’s work was taking peoples faces of people and posting them around the city to show that we are all the same and should be treated like it. We incorporated them in our action project by combining the two projects. We did the by carving out the You Are Beautiful letters and printing face out of people we know and pasting them on to our letters and putting them in the GCE garden walkway as public art. The process of the entire project was planning it out which consisted of deciding the material, talking pictures, printing pictures and deciding how to make it nice. Building was the fun part because we had to cut plastic in the shape of the letter we chose and also we got to cut out our pictures and wheat paste them onto the letter. Installing the piece was the easiest part because all we had to do was stick the letters into the ground.

My Heroes' Journeys

Sandooches. (2008). The Green Lantern Corps Logo. Wikipedia

 The Battle Of Fear

The battle of fear is an analysis of the Green Lanterns journey and how it relates to the heroes journey.

Introduction
My hero was the Green Lantern Hal Jordan. I chose this to be my fictional hero because I’ve always liked the Green Lantern and all of his powers and his profession in the ordinary world. The things I do not like about the Green Lantern is his irresponsibility and cockiness. I am going to tell you how the Green Lantern movie follows the heroes journey. The heroes journey is a theory that every story on heroes is thought to follow  Joseph Campbell came up with this theory. In the following text you will see how the Green Lantern movie follows the heroes journey.

The Call
The call to adventure for Hal Jordan is when the Green Lantern ring chose him. The ring chose him after one of the Green Lanterns died. When a Green Lantern is dying they fly to the nearest planet to start the selection process and the planet just happened to be earth. The ring chooses a person that it thinks is fit to bear the great responsibility to be a hero. The Ring Traveled to him by flying and carrying him away to meet the almost fallen green lantern.

Mentor
The mentor of Hal Jordan is Sinestro. I think this is his mentor because he is wiser and has more experience being a lantern. Sinestro teaches Hal to build constructs with the ring and how his will affects the construct’s stability and also he tries to make Hal Jordan a better Lantern.

The Unknown
The unknown for Hal Jordan is when he goes to the planet Oah and meets so many other Green Lanterns because he is so used to thinking humans are the only beings in the universe. When he first goes to Oah he is surprised to see all the other Lanterns. He feels confused and somewhat amazed.

Trials
There are a lot of trials for our young hero Hal Jordan has to face such as strengthening his will and just the thought of becoming a green lantern is a challenge for Hal. But one of the most important trials is when the earth is attacked by Parallax and he has to get over his fear or let the world perish by the hands of Parallax.

Abyss/ Infinite Despair
I think the moment of infinite despair is when Parallax has the Green Lantern trapped under his force field and Hal is at the moment where he thinks that he will be defeated but he gathers all his strength and will and pushes Parallax away and chases him away from earth.

Rebirth
The moment of rebirth for Hal is when he is trapped. He starts saying the Green Lantern code, and that gave him the strength and will to defeat Parallax. He also learned to control his fear. He was afraid of Parallax and the thought of the world being in his hands. He controls his fear by realizing that if he does not, then the world will be destroyed. He does not know he can defeat Parallax but he has the will to try to save the place and ones he loves.

 Atonement
After the courageous battle between Hal Jordan and Parallax, Hal returns to earth and basically realizes that he has to leave his ordinary life behind to become a hero. And he does that by finally taking responsibility because in the movie he is very irresponsible and he learns that he has to take responsibility for protecting his assigned sector. He realized the he was assigned to take care of earth and he realizes that if he does not nobody will. At first he was irresponsible because he would not show up to work on time and he was very cocky in his actions. He transformed because now he is taking responsibility and show more care in what he does.

The Return
He balances the ordinary with the extraordinary by realizing that he can still have his normal life while also protecting his sector. He still can have an ordinary life because after all he is still human and has responsibilities other than being a Lantern, such as being a test pilot for the military.

 Conclusion
The Green Lantern Hal Jordan is a hero because at first he was a irresponsible cocky arrogant person and when the ring chose him he slowly started to make a change for the better. He starts to become less cocky because he realizes that there is always someone that is more experienced and better at what they do than you. He becomes less irresponsible because he realizes that he has to protect earth and whatever else is in his assigned sector. The biggest change of all is his attitude, He is more compassionate and careful of the people around him, his partners, and his sector. The eight steps above explain the parts of the heroes journey as identified by Joseph Campbell.

The Call
My dad was working at the Boston Sea Party as an assistant kitchen manager. And wasn't making enough money and his dad asked him if he wanted to come work with him so he took the job.

Mentor
His mentor was a man named Bill Palm. Bill was his mentor Because he never told him what he did wrong he made him think about it and learn from mistakes and i think that is a very smart way to mentor someone. He also taught him everything he knows in the construction industry such as bricklaying and being a laborer.

The Unknown
The unknown place was the first job site he was on because when the workers asked for equipment he didn't know what half of them were talking about. and also your first day is always the hardest because he didn't know anyone and he had no idea what he was supposed to be doing.

Trials
The trials were that they left him in charge of ten bricklayers and he had to keep up and make sure everyone had what they needed and he had to get the next place where they were going to go to work. learning how to drive the forklift. Learning how to drive the truck. Also learning how to be a laborer.

Abyss
He was the only laborer on the job and the bricklayers were working on pipe frames 20 ft in the air and he did not have a tractor. He had to take 12 in rock face blocks and lift them up level by level up 5 levels and climb down and do it all over again all day. At that moment he was so fed up that he went to the foreman and said if he doesn't get help he won’t come back

Rebirth
The moment of rebirth actually happened the next day when he started to get more help on the job and acquired the right materials to do the job right and quicker. And he also made friends with some of the workers and he had some idea what he was doing.

Atonement
After all of that time being a laborer he realized that he did not want that to be his permanent profession so he look into being a brick layer. And he changed from new construction to restoration which is repairing old buildings.

The Return
I guess you can say that his extraordinary became his ordinary.  He is now happy with his job and it became part of his everyday life.

Conclusion
The hero story of my dad is not as intense as the Green Lantern story but in my eyes he is still a hero. I did not know my dad when he was working at the Boston Sea Party but from what he has told me I would say that he made a change for the better because now he has a good family and a good job. He also has a nice car and house. In conclusion i think his transformation is a good one and he is an inspirational person to me. My dad is my inspiration because I want to see myself where he is when I am older.

Children are our future !!!!

This project is for my math and science class called population. The purpose of this project was to write an argument to a topic that we were assigned. I was assigned child mortality and I wrote mine on what we could do to prevent it. I am proud of all the work I did especially in my writing. I learned a lot more about child mortality than I already knew.

Measles Campaign 17. N.P. 17 December 2008. Flickr.

Child mortality is a big problem for our population. For example, in 2007, the child population was 82,304,668 and the number of children that died were 53,287, putting the child mortality rate at 64.7 (“Child Mortality”). One way to address the issue of child mortality is providing health benefits for pregnant and nursing mothers, because the mother’s health affects the child’s health.
Take Brazil for example. Last year, they reached the United Nation’s goal of reducing child mortality by ⅔, and they continue to provide new solutions for the problem of child mortality (Page). In Brazil especially, poverty affects access to health care and vaccinations in particular.  According to Page, one of the most important solutions they have found is visiting families and informing them about health issues, including why mothers should breastfeed and how to get vaccinated. “When I started,” says Graça, “the big killers of children here were pneumonia, diarrhea, measles and malnutrition. But we have made a lot of progress on all of these, including through vaccinations and helping everyone understand how important breastfeeding is.”  The programs in Brazil are doing just that.
A similar solution is being implemented in Uruguay.  Zunin writes about a program in Uruguay that has decreased the rates of malnutrition in children.  The programme called “Uruguay Grows with You,” provides regular medical check-ups for children, which increased from 50 to 82 percent (Zunin).  Like Brazil’s program, the program in Uruguay reaches 1,447 children and 313 pregnant women (Zunin).  The program has been very effective in reducing child mortality.  For example, prematurity decreased among newborns from 9 to 7 percent (Zunin).  Both the program in Brazil and the program in Uruguay attempt to help mothers and children of low economic status.  In addition, they both provide medical attention and education on the important issue of child mortality.
Have you ever heard someone say, “Children are the future”?  Well, it’s true.  Children have dreams, and they have the right to accomplish those dreams, and you never know what he/she might do to improve the state of our world.  If the child mortality rate does not decrease, take a moment to consider the effect on our population.
Indeed, the population is at an all-time high, and continues to grow daily, but I don’t think it’s fair for the government to decide who gets to live and who doesn’t.  Thus, I sincerely think that we need programs in place around the world to keep mothers and young children informed about the actions they can take to better their health.  As Patrick McDonald, Founder of Viva Network said, "Why is it that a child's death amounts to a tragedy, but the death of millions is merely a statistic?"  Saving one child may not change statistics much, but it may
change the outcome on our world.

Honey Bee Population

This project is for my math and science class called Population. The purpose of this project was to study a population of my choice. I chose bees, because bees are a feasible study system due to their high population numbers in my neighborhood. Then I had to come up with a question to research about my population. My question was what type of plants do bees prefer?  In this project I learned a lot about my population and what plants they prefer. Other parts of this project included researching the Evolutionary history of my population. From my research, I discovered that bees originally came from Southern Africa when they were thought to have come from Asia. The most challenging part of this project was finding time to study my population in nature. I am proud of all the work I put into making my presentation. You can look at my presentation below.

Earth Maker and Coyote

This project was for my history and language class called Stories. In this project we had to draw our interpretation of a creation story. The text of this story had to be less than 20 words per slide. The purpose of this project was to see if we can tell a creation story through images and very little text. I liked the drawing part of the assignment because I am an artist and love to draw. I am especially proud of slides two and seven because I put the most effort in these slides. Please enjoy my interpretation of Earth Maker and Coyote

The Responsible Dog And The Lazy Raccoon

For this action project we had to make a fable based on one of the rules of the code of conduct. We learned a lot about the code of conduct and how to write a fable and also what a fable is. I am proud of all the work I did in this project. When I was writing my fable I ran into some difficulties because it was hard putting together a story and a code of conduct rule. In the end I like how my story came out. You can read my story below.

The Lazy Raccoon and the Responsible Dog

Once upon a time, there was a responsible dog and a lazy raccoon. The dog and the raccoon shared an apartment. The responsible dog went to work everyday and worked hard, but all the lazy raccoon did was lay on the couch and eat chips. One day, the dog got mad at the raccoon for not having a job. So, when the dog woke up the next morning and found the raccoon laying on the couch, he decided it was time to put his paw down. He woke up the raccoon and said "you have to get a job or else I'm going to kick you out."

So the raccoon decided to go on a job hunt. He went in his room and threw on the first outfit he saw. "That's what you're wearing?" asked the dog angrily. The dog then told him " you should always dress for the job you want not the job you have." While the dog went to work, the raccoon thought about the dog’s advice. The raccoon decided that he wanted a fancy job, but he didn't know how to dress. He threw on a sloppy shirt and left to get a job, but he got turned down every time because of his clothes. At the end of the day, the raccoon came home jobless, which disappointed the dog. The dog ended up kicking him out. The raccoon left, but the next day he was right back at the dog’s door begging for forgiveness.

The dog asked him why he dressed like that to go on a job hunt and the raccoon answered "you said dress for the job I want  but I dint know how to dress so I dressed like any other day." So the dog explained that he meant to dress professionally and make a good impression.

Dress for the job you want not the job you have and always dress to impress.

Dichotomous Key

BKJ. (2013) Bolivian Gray Titi Monkey Poster. Chicago: GCE.

This is a project for my Population math and science class. The purpose of this project was to make a dichotomous key of an animal of our choice. I learned a lot about what a dichotomous key is and how we classify animals. I am proud of all the work I did in this project because I spent time and energy creating a product that summarizes everything I have learned so far in Population. You can read the information from my board below.

Bolivian Gray Titi Monkeys are small primates with thick, fluffy fur and tails that can reach up to 19 inches in length. As their name implies, their fur is often gray, although it can range to orangish-brown in color, particularly on the belly and chest, with white ear tufts.

Bolivian Gray Titi Monkeys are also called White Eared Titi Monkeys because of the distinct markings on their ears. In the wild, one of their main predators is the ornate Hawk-Eagle.  The monkeys also camouflage well. To spot the monkeys, look for movements among the branches or as they hop from tree to tree.

Titi Monkeys are small to medium size primates, typically about the size of a rabbit, (research by Hersh Kovitz 1990-95) they do not have Prehensile tails and are not sexually dimorphic.  Pleage and body coloration differs between species of Titi Monkeys, but all species typically have thick fur or are somewhat shaggy in appearance. All species can be different in pelage, and body pelage-extremity can come in a variety of colors, such as: pale brown, black, brown, gray, orange, red, yellow, or a combination of the colors. The tail is longer than the head and body combined.
